Plastic Packaging Tax and EPR

What is plastic costing you?

Put in roughly what you use each month. The calculator shows the Plastic Packaging Tax and EPR fees on that plastic each year, and the fees on the paper and fibre that would replace it.

Plastic Packaging Tax

HMRC charges £228.82 a tonne from 1 April 2026 on plastic packaging made in or imported into the UK with less than 30% recycled plastic. The business that makes or imports it pays, once it handles 10 tonnes or more in 12 months, and the cost is usually passed on in the price you pay for it.

Extended Producer Responsibility

EPR makes the businesses that put packaging on the market pay for collecting and recycling it. Large producers (more than £2 million turnover and more than 50 tonnes of packaging a year) pay a waste disposal fee per tonne of household packaging, which includes parcels sent to homes. From 2026–27 the fee depends on how recyclable the packaging is: red, amber or green. The figures here are PackUK's illustrative fees for 2026–27.
